Hiking Tour: “Alpannonia Part 1b.2 & 2.1: Pfaffensattel – Kranichberger Schwaig”

The Alpannonia® long distance trail combines in up to 7 stages a tour from the eastern alps in Austria towards the “pannonian lowlands” in Hungary. This tour combines stage the last part of stage 1b and the first third of stage 2, covering the trail from Pfaffensattel towards Kranichberger Schwaig.

Stage 1b (part 2) and the first third of stage 2 of the Alpannonia® long distance trail from “Pfaffensattel” towards “Kranichberger Schwaig”

The Alpannonia® long distance trail combines in up to 7 stages a tour from the eastern alps in Austria towards the “pannonian lowlands” in Hungary. The entire trail is 125 km long and 3.800 meters in ascent. It is normally done in 7 days, starting in Fischbach (AT) and ending in Köszeg (HU).

The tour starts at the Pfaffensattel pass and then follows the marked trail using trails and paths eastwards towards Hochwechsel / Kranichberger Schwaig. The tour does some recommended detours from the main trail towards the peaks of Kleiner and Großer Pfaff, allowing some impressive distance views over this area. The tour then ascends via the Harterkogel before descending towards the Feistritzsattel pass and then ascends again towards the Kranichberger Schwaig at the bottom of Hochwechsel.
 
Tour Description

00:00 Start at the parking of Pfaffensattel pass (GPS: 47.570076, 15.813988) and follow the trail eastwards (follow the alpannonia markings towards Feistritzsattel).
00:01 At the crossing, turn left and follow the forest road towards Feistritzsattel (follow the alpannonia markings).
00:10 Leave the forest road and turn (straight ahead) into the red-white-red marked trail upwards through the forest.
00:20 Enjoy the view back towards Stuhleck from Grabmayr Kogel.
00:25 Recommended detour: Turn right and follow the small trail towards Kleiner Pfaff.
00:30 At the crossing, turn right and follow the trail up towards the summit of Kleiner Pfaff.
00:35 Enjoy the view from Kleiner Pfaff towards Stuhleck. Descend back to the crossing and follow the path southwards which brings you back to the Alpannonia® main trail.
00:45 Recommeded detour: Keep right and follow the trail up to Großer Paff (see wooden signpost “Zum Gipfel”).
00:55 Enjoy the awesome view from Großer Paff – best enjoyed with a self-brought refreshment ().
01:10 Continue following the small trail eastwards to descend from Großer Paff back to the Alpannonia® main trail.
01:20 Turn right into the Alpannonia⪚ main trail and follow it eastwards.
01:35 Awe to the giant summit cross of Harterkogel 🙂 and continue following the trail eastwards.
01:45 Enjoy the view from the wooden summit cross and continue following the marked trail eastwards descending towards Feistritzsattel.
02:05 Turn left into the forest road and follow the marked trail towards Feistritzsattel.
02:06 At the crossing between the two Alpannonia® trails, turn right and follow the lower forest road.
02:20 At the Feistritzsattel pass, follow the Alpannonia® trail towards Kranichberger Schwaig (turn left into the red-white-red marked trail).
02:30 At the crossing, first turn left, follow the forest road and then turn right 2x towards Kranichberger Schwaig.
03:00 Keep slightly right and follow the alpannonia trail eastwards towards Kranichberger Schwaig.
03:20 Turn right into the trail through the meadow towards Bärenlacke and then Kranichberger Schwaig.
03:30 Well deserved break ( ) at the Kranichberger Schwaig.
