Hike up the most iconic natural landmark of Maramures: “Creasta Cocosului”

This tour starts at the street 109F between Budesti and Kapnik Grup whereas parking must be done at the beginning of a forest street (e.g. GPS: 47.687615, 23.897561). The tour then follows the forest street which is also used as a mountain bike track (marked with a red “C” on a white box) and first leads around the Creasta Cocosului. The ascent is then done from behind via a steep (but short) trail till reaching the plateau. After enjoying the unique view from Creasta Cocosului, the tour then continues following the ridge (not exposed) towards the two other peaks: the Gutâiul Mare and the Gutâiul Mic. The descent is done following the trail till reaching the street again.

Tour Description

00:00 Start at the parking (GPS: 47.687615, 23.897561) and follow the forest road (red “C”).
00:17 Follow the forest road (mountain bike track) which makes a right U turn.
00:28 The clearing allows a great view back to the street and the surrounding landscape.
01:00 At the hayfield, enjoy the view towards Creasta Cocosului (left hand side) and the surroundings. Either stay on the track – or shortcut via the hayfield (by turning left). The later requires good navigation skills since the trail is not marked!
01:20 Follow the mountain bike track (red “C”) towards Creasta Cocosului.
01:47 Short break / detour at the small lake (left hand side). Be aware of the many signs of wildlife (footprints).
01:55 Continue on the mountain bike track through the mountain pastures.
Please note: Signposts show a shortcut towards Creasta Cocosului. You can either follow them or stay on the track.
02:10 Turn left into the trail towards Creasta Cocosului. The trail passes a unique trunk (see pictures).
02:25 Warning signs indicate the beginning of the steep trail up to Creasta Cocosului. Follow the trail.
02:45 Break at Creasa Cocosului. Walk around, explore its unique rocks (maybe climb one)* and ridge, enjoy the view and rest with self-brought snacks and drinks ().
03:45 Continue the tour following the trail on the (not exposed) ridge towards the Gutâiul Mare peak (trail on the left hand side).
04:25 Enjoy the view from the Gutâiul Mare peak and follow the trail towards Gutâiul Mic.
Please note:The trail is sometimes tangly and not easy to find!
04:47 At the Gutâiul Mic, either walk around (be aware of the markings which are irritating!) or climb up following the small trails (I-).
05:25 Follow the trail through the woods. The trail is sometimes blocked by fallen trees which must be circumvented.
05:40 Either follow the trail on the right hand side which leads towards the street (109F) or follow the small trail on the left hand side returning to the mountain bike trail (navigation skills required due to missing markings!!!).
06:00 Back at the car – End of the tour.

*: The second rock is relatively easy to climb, however it is exposed and requires climbing experience (I+).
